FAQ

  • What does private dog training look like?

For the most part, we’ll connect through phone or email and a history of your dog’s background and behaviours will be taken, allowing us to determine the best course of action for you and your dog. We will set up an appointment at your convivence and meet you at your home or at an outdoor space such as a park, and that’s when we’ll get to work. Lessons typically run for an hour and a half.

After your training lesson, you will receive homework and any resources that will assist you in your training goals. We encourage you to contact us via phone/text or email to keep us posted on your training progress and to ask any questions that arise.

  • Will my dog need multiple private training lessons?

Many behaviours such as leash reactivity, resource guarding, impulse control issues, excessive barking, door/greeting manners, or any fear-based behaviours, just to name a few, require multiple lessons. In these cases, we like to book lessons a week or two apart in order to give you time to practice your homework and for you and your dog to adjust to the training. The number of lessons that you need depends on how much effort you put into your homework, as well as the extent of your dog’s behaviours.

We offer a 10% discount for clients who purchase a 3-pack training plan.

  • What do I need to do in order to prepare for a private training lesson?

We ask that you have treats ready to go. The best treats are tiny, chewy and extra yummy! If we are working on leash reactivity or fear issues, we recommend using food that is VERY HIGH value – in these cases, dog treats simply don’t cut it. In some cases, instead of food we use toys/balls, a game of tug-of war, or anything your dog considers a reward!

Note: We won’t always use food for training and if we do, we won’t need to use it forever. We slowly fade food out of the equation as your dog’s training progresses.

For anything leash manners related, a comfortable harness, a head halter, or collar (for pullers, we recommend a front clip harness) will be required for your lesson. Normal nylon leashes are preferred. We typically don’t use retractable leashes during a training lesson, and we will not work with a dog in a shock, pinch/prong or choke collar.

If your dog has bitten a human, we might require your dog to wear a basket muzzle during our training lesson.

  • Do you use shock or correction collars such as prongs/pinches or choke chains?

No – this isn’t our style. These tools are painful and inhumane, and can break a dog’s spirit. If you have been using these tools, we can help get you onto a more humane and force-free training path, and promise to do so without any sort of judgement.

  • How long will it take to train my dog?

Think of dog training like going to the gym or accomplishing any task or goal. The more effort you put in, the faster you’ll see positive results. You also need to consider your dog’s background and requirements, any previous training, and your training goals. This is a hard question to answer, but after our initial lesson, we can assess how much training you and your dog might require in order to achieve your dog training goals.

  • What type of payment do you take?

We accept cash or Interac e-transfer.
